According to Wikipedia (which offers a great geeky definition) – “an air flow meter, is a device that measures air flow, i.e. how much air is flowing through a tube. It does not measure the volume of the air passing through the tube, it measures the actual speed of the air flowing through the device in a defined time segment. Thus air flow meters are simply an application of mass flow meters for a special medium. Typically, mass air flow measurements are expressed in the units of kilograms per second ”
The cost of a used Air Flow Meter can range from $25-$30 in some vehicles and upwards of $315 for a 2012 Mercedes S550

Just keep things clean and check the plug from time to time during oil changes or routine maintenance.
